What it is. Resonance breathing (also called coherence breathing or resonance frequency breathing) is a paced breathing protocol that maximises HRV by synchronising the breath with the body's natural cardiovascular oscillation frequency. The target: approximately six breaths per minute, or 5.5 seconds in, 5.5 seconds out. At this rate, the heart rate wave produced by the breath perfectly reinforces the pressure wave from the baroreceptors in the aorta, creating a resonance effect — like pushing a swing at exactly the right moment. The result is the highest possible HRV amplitude, and with it, the strongest measurable shift toward parasympathetic tone.

How to do it. 1. Sit comfortably, spine upright, jaw relaxed 2. Inhale slowly through the nose for 5.5 seconds 3. Exhale slowly through the nose or mouth for 5.5 seconds 4. No holds — continuous, smooth flow in and out 5. Continue for 5–20 minutes

The pace can be guided by a metronome, a simple phone timer, or apps designed for the purpose. After a few weeks of daily practice, the rhythm becomes familiar enough to drop without a guide. If 5.5 seconds feels too long at first, begin at 5 seconds and work up.

When to use it. Prevention practice — not a fire extinguisher. Resonance breathing builds baseline HRV over time through daily sessions of 5–20 minutes. It is the single most evidence-backed breathing intervention for measurable HRV improvement, with studies showing results within 2–4 weeks of consistent practice. Use it as a morning anchor, during a lunch break, or before sleep.

Mechanism. Every breath produces a small oscillation in heart rate — slightly faster on the inhale (sympathetic activation), slightly slower on the exhale (parasympathetic activation). This pattern, called respiratory sinus arrhythmia, is a normal and healthy feature of the autonomic nervous system.

The baroreceptors in the aortic arch monitor blood pressure and send signals to the brainstem that also oscillate — at their own natural frequency of roughly 0.1 Hz, or one cycle every 10 seconds. At six breaths per minute, the respiratory cycle (also about 10 seconds) locks into the same frequency as the baroreceptor signal. The two waves reinforce each other, producing a resonance amplification of both signals. HRV amplitude peaks. Vagal Tone increases. The parasympathetic branch is maximally engaged.

Daily practice does not just produce this effect in the session — it trains the system. With regular use, baseline HRV rises and the nervous system develops greater flexibility: a faster, fuller shift toward parasympathetic in response to any calming input, and a cleaner return to baseline after any stressor.

The ancient parallel. The 5.5-second respiratory cycle is not new. Studies measuring the pacing of recitation in the Catholic rosary, Hindu pranayama traditions, and Zen chanting have all found breath rates in the same 5–6 breaths per minute range. The contemplative traditions independently landed on this rate — not through neuroscience, but through millennia of observing what produced a particular quality of stillness and presence. The mechanism was discovered long before the measurement arrived.
