What it is. A deliberately softened, widened visual field — the opposite of the narrowed, fixed gaze that the nervous system defaults to under threat. When the threat-detection system activates, the eyes narrow and lock onto the perceived danger: tunnel vision. Panoramic gaze is the reverse: the focus diffuses, the gaze softens, and the peripheral field opens. How to do it. Soften your gaze: instead of focusing on any one thing, let the eyes rest without locking onto a target. Allow the peripheral field to come in — the edges, the movement, the whole scene — without actively scanning it. Hold this soft, wide attention for about 30 seconds. It can be done while sitting, standing, driving, or waiting. It requires no visible change in behavior, which makes it usable in meetings, on public transport, or anywhere that other techniques would be conspicuous.

When to use it. Anxious scanning. Screen fatigue after long focused work. The fixed, narrowed alertness that accumulates during tense conversations. The physiological sigh and panoramic gaze are a natural pair: one works on the breath, the other on the eyes, and both produce a rapid shift in the same direction through different pathways.

Mechanism. The superior colliculus in the brainstem continuously monitors visual field width as part of threat assessment: narrow focus implies pursuit or danger, wide-angle vision implies open and safe terrain. Expanding the visual field sends a bottom-up safety signal directly to the brainstem and amygdala, bypassing the prefrontal cortex entirely. This is the same mechanism behind the calming effect of open landscapes and natural environments: panoramic visual input is the sensory equivalent of clear horizon. The signal arrives before conscious deliberation, which is why it works even when cognition is already overwhelmed.
