What it is. Deliberate horizontal eye movements, moving the gaze slowly from left to right and back, activate brainstem circuits that modulate the stress response via the vagus nerve. It is the same basic mechanism that underlies EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), where bilateral stimulation of the visual system is used clinically to process traumatic memory. The self-directed version is simpler: no therapist, no protocol, just slow lateral movement of the eyes.
How to do it. 1. Sit comfortably with your head still 2. Without moving your head, move your eyes slowly to the far left, then slowly to the far right 3. Move at a pace of roughly one full sweep (left to right) every 2–3 seconds 4. Continue for 30–60 seconds 5. Close your eyes briefly and notice the shift
The movement should be slow and deliberate, not rapid or jerky. Some people find it helpful to hold a finger out to the side and track it with their eyes, moving it slowly across their visual field.
When to use it. Acute anxiety or distress, before a performance or difficult conversation, or when other techniques feel inaccessible. It requires no equipment, no sound, and no noticeable external behavior, which makes it usable in public or professional settings where other techniques would be conspicuous.
Mechanism. The superior colliculus, a structure in the brainstem involved in orienting and visual processing, connects to circuits that regulate autonomic tone. Slow lateral gaze activates these pathways in a way that appears to inhibit the threat-detection loop running through the amygdala. The bilateral nature of the movement may also activate interhemispheric communication, which is part of why EMDR uses it for memory consolidation and trauma processing: the brain integrates difficult material more effectively when the lateral movement is occurring.
The working theory in EMDR research is that the eye movement mimics the rapid eye movement (REM) pattern that occurs during sleep, during which the brain consolidates and processes emotional memory. Whether this is the exact mechanism is still debated, but the autonomic effect (measured HRV increase, self-reported calm) is consistent.
Relationship to EMDR. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation in a structured clinical context with a trained therapist to treat trauma and PTSD. The self-directed lateral gaze practice described here is not EMDR. It borrows the same underlying mechanism but without the trauma processing protocol. For acute anxiety regulation, the mechanism appears to work independently of the clinical application. For processing specific traumatic memories, EMDR with a trained practitioner remains the appropriate context.
Paired with panoramic vision. After lateral gaze movements, allowing the gaze to soften and the peripheral field to widen (panoramic vision) extends the regulatory effect. The two techniques complement each other: lateral gaze activates the brainstem circuit, panoramic vision sustains the non-threat-scanning visual state that follows.
Evidence level: indirect (well-studied in EMDR clinical context; mechanism for self-directed use is plausible and supported by brainstem anatomy but has limited direct RCT evidence for the standalone technique)
