What it is. Humming, chanting, singing, and gargling all stimulate the vagus nerve through its laryngeal and pharyngeal branches. The vibration produced in the throat and vocal cords travels directly into adjacent vagal nerve tissue, producing measurable autonomic effects: reduced heart rate, increased heart rate variability, and reported calm. The technique requires no equipment, no specific training, and produces noticeable effects within two to three minutes.
It is also the most socially ancient vagal stimulation practice in human history. Lullabies, group chanting, congregational singing, shamanic song, Gregorian chant, Buddhist mantras, the Hindu Om: these traditions converged on the same physiological mechanism without any of them having a word for the vagus nerve.
How to do it.
Humming: 1. Close your mouth and breathe in through the nose 2. On the exhale, make a continuous "mmm" sound at a comfortable pitch and volume 3. Feel the vibration in your lips, cheeks, and chest 4. Aim for a long, slow exhale on each hum, which also extends the exhale and activates the thoracic vagal branch simultaneously 5. Continue for 2–3 minutes
Pitch matters less than vibration. Find whatever pitch produces the strongest felt resonance in your chest and head.
Gargling: 1. Take a mouthful of water 2. Tilt your head back and gargle for 30–60 seconds 3. The contraction of the pharyngeal muscles stimulates the vagal branch directly 4. Repeat 2–3 times
Gargling without water (a "dry gargle" using air and a back-of-throat vibration) works through the same mechanism.
Singing: Sustained, deliberate singing produces a stronger effect than humming because it combines laryngeal vibration with controlled breathing and prolonged exhale. Singing in a group adds the ventral vagal (social safety) activation on top of the mechanical stimulation: two distinct pathways firing simultaneously.
When to use it. Humming is accessible in private moments — in the car, in the shower, during the morning routine. It is low-intensity, comfortable, and easily sustained. It is better suited as a regular daily habit than as an acute intervention, though two to three minutes of humming during a stressful moment produces a noticeable shift.
Gargling is most practical in the morning and is worth pairing with other parts of the daily routine.
Singing, particularly with others, produces the strongest combined effect and carries the additional co-regulation benefit of being present with other regulated nervous systems.
The Om specifically. The Sanskrit mantra Om produces vibration across three distinct resonance zones: the belly (the A), the chest (the U), and the skull (the M). The closing M is an extended nasal hum. Practiced at a slow, sustained pace, a single cycle of Om lasts 15–20 seconds and activates the thoracic, laryngeal, and auricular vagal branches in sequence. This is not mysticism. It is also not coincidence.
Mechanism. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve (Arnold's nerve) innervates the skin of the ear canal and the area around the jaw and throat. The laryngeal and pharyngeal branches innervate the vocal cords and throat muscles directly. Vibration of the tissues in these areas creates mechanical stimulation of adjacent nerve fibers. This is the same pathway that makes transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) devices effective: they deliver small electrical currents to the ear canal for the same reason.
Evidence level: moderate (consistent measurable effects on HRV in small studies; mechanistic pathway well-understood; strong cross-cultural traditional evidence; large-scale RCT data limited)
